For decades I have been documenting a community of inhabitants on Aquinnah Beach. Located on the island of Martha’s Vineyard in the town of Aquinnah, it is a parcel of land that perilously flirts with the sea and narrowly stretches alongside cliffs made up of erratic rocks, clay and sand. A section of it is designated as clothing optional.
Note: My first explorations of Aquinnah Beach started in 1988. Both the town and beach went by the name of Gay Head before 1997. By the end of 1997 the town changed its name to Aquinnah, Wampanoag for “Land Under the Hill.”
